What is Knitcircus?

Knitcircus is an independent online magazine; we publish quarterly and knit every day. Knitcircus features knitting and sewing patterns, interviews, articles, and reviews, with an eco- and socially-responsible bent. Check out the interviews, reviews, articles, recipes and pattern previews for free! If you like what you see, the pattern collection is available for purchase while that issue's live.

I don't see anything on the homepage! What's going on?

You need to have Flash enabled to see the magazine, so please change your settings and try again!

Where can I find back issues?

You can find them on the Past Issues page.

Why do you sell the pattern collection as a whole?

Supporting our designers remains very important to us and we want to make sure that they have the latitude to write patterns more complex, simple, traditional and unusual than the norm. Offering the pattern collection as a whole and for limited time allows us to keep the prices affordable for our readers; the 17 patterns we’re able to offer now costs the same as our print issues with fewer patterns.

Why are the patterns only available for a limited time?

We value our designers’ hours of effort behind each pattern, and want to make sure their rights are protected. Once the issue goes to the archives, all rights return to the designers and they may choose to include the pattern in our online store and/or sell or re-submit it where they choose.

How does the Knitcircus Pattern Shop work?

Designers from past issues choose to include their pattern in the store, so please browse for your favorites; a purchase will deliver a pdf download of the individual pattern to your email address. If you don’t see a pattern from a previous issue in the store, please contact the designer directly.

How can I print the free magazine?

If you see an article you like, or simply want the whole issue on paper, scroll down past the graphics; you’ll see a gray navigation bar below. On the right side, you’ll see an icon for printing the whole document, and another for saving it to your computer as a pdf. That way, you can print as many pages as you’d like or save it to decide later!

How can I link to your site from my blog?

If you like the image at left, feel free to use the code in the box below.

How do I submit a design?

We publish quarterly; for more info and to download our Style Guide, please visit our Submissions page.

Knitcircus accepts knitting patterns, crochet patterns, sewing patterns and tutorials, multicraft patterns (incorporating knitting and crochet or sewing) and fibercraft (needlefelting, spinning) projects.

Can I submit an article for Knitcircus?

Knitcircus welcomes article submissions; topics may include: highlighting a particular technique or design aspect (Fitting a Pattern to  Large Bust,  Freeform Knitting), a knitting trend or new technology (Podcasts, Hot Socks, Knitting in Iceland), interviews with designers/authors or well-written personal essays.

How do I advertise in Knitcircus?

If you’ve got a knitting or fibercraft business, we’ve got an ad and price that works for you, from the smallest Etsy store to the most established yarn purveyor. We value small independent businesses (we are one); if you make high-quality yarn, we can talk yarn support for our designers and exposure for you! Download a pdf of our ad specs. Please email jaala@knitcircus.com for pricing info.

Will you review my yarns, books, sewing patterns or other Crafty Thing?

Please contact Jaala; jaala@knitcircus.com if you’d like to send something for review. We only review things we genuinely like, so there’s no pay-for-placement here. If you’re a small, independent dyer, an independent sewing-pattern creator or an expert in knitting who’s self-publishing, we’re very interested; if you’re an established yarn seller or publisher, of course we’re interested in your new or innovative offerings. We also place reviews in our monthly online newsletter and the Knitcircus Blog.

Why did you move online? What's wrong with print?

Knitcircus was in print for two years before making our move online; while we love a print magazine, the cost of printing and shipping glossy paper proved unsustainable for our small business. We’re happy to be online now and able to expand our reach, be easily viewed overseas, save all of that paper and those inks/solvents, use more and bigger photos and offer some of our content for free. Print subscriptions will be honored in the form of delivering pattern collections to subscribers as long as their subscription term lasts.

Does Knitcircus support any charities?

We contribute to Heifer International and KIVA. Check them out!

I am a subscriber and I didn't get an issue I was supposed to. Help!

We’ve made every effort to contact all of our print subscribers and let them know what’s up. If you purchased a subscription and have not seen an issue notification or pattern collection in your inbox, please let us know; we’ll make sure we’ve got the correct email address and hook you up right away!
