Submissions

Thanks for your interest in submitting patterns or articles to Knitcircus!

We accept knitting pattern proposals, and crochet proposals for specific projects. Knitcircus publishes an online magazine five times yearly, and will be starting to publish a series of e-books and print books in 2012. Patterns written for Knitcircus must be your original work and not previously offered in print or online. We ask for first North American print rights; designers retain all rights to their patterns following the magazine's Period of Currency (typically three months).

Knitting and Crochet Patterns:

  • Proposals: Please submit proposals for yarn support including a sketch and short description of your pattern, a photograph of a swatch, suggested yarns and your contact information as a pdf. Send to: jaala@knitcircus.com by the dates given below. We make every effort to acknowledge receipt of proposal within 48 hours; if you have not heard back, please inquire and/or send the proposal again.

  • Written Patterns: Once your proposal is accepted, please download and review the Knitcircus Style Guide (pdf) and the Knitcircus Submissions Template (doc. file). The Knitcircus Style Guide provides detailed information on the style required for all submissions; this file also includes all standard Knitcircus abbreviations, as well as standardized definitions for cable and twisted stitches. All pattern submissions should follow the structure of the Knitcircus Knitting and Crochet Submission Template. Unless your project is a simple shape with little sizing, please download and use the Knitcircus Schematics Guidelines. Please make your pattern complete and ready for publication to the best of your ability before submission: because of staff constraints, we are not able to provide size grading for multi-size patterns.

All submissions must be accompanied by the signed originality statement; ‘signed’ can mean signed, scanned and sent electronically, signed on paper and sent through the postal mail or ‘signed’ by typing your name and the date and returned electronically with your submission.

Photos: Please send photos upon sample completion for tech-editing purposes; we prefer to photograph samples with our models for publication. Please send completed samples to: Knitcircus Magazine, 5102 Shawano Terrace, Madison, WI 53705 (USA); we will return your samples as soon as possible after photography and/or inclusion in Knitcircus Trunk Shows.

Compensation: Designers receive $55-$150 USD, professional technical editing, schematics and photos, a free ad spot for your blog/business/store, and 10 Pattern Collections to share with knitting friends. All rights revert to designers after next issue goes live.

Yarn support is available from Berocco, Bijou Basin, Blue Sky Alpacas, Brown Sheep, Cascade, Classic Elite, Dream in Color, Green Mountain Spinnery, KFI, Knitpicks, Kollage, Kraemer, Quince and Company, Schaefer, Spud and Chloë, SWTC, Universal Yarns, WEBS Valley yarns, Zen Yarn Garden and independent dyers like Alisha Goes Around, Anzula Fibers, Sun Valley Farms, Handwerks Textiles, Kitchen Sink Dyeworks, Indigo Dragonfly, Pico Accuardi Dyeworks, Pollika, Miss Babs, Sincere Sheep, Stricken Smitten, Sanguine Gryphon, Springtree Road, Sweet Georgia, Tactile Fibers Yarn Hollow, and Yarn Love.
