Submissions

Thanks for your interest in submitting to Knitcircus!

We accept knitting patterns, small-scale sewing patterns and tutorials, recipes, and fibercraft project tutorials (needlefelting, repurposing linens, etc). Designers retain all rights to their projects three months following magazine release.

  • Knitting Patterns: The patterns must be your original work and not previously offered as a free pattern, in print or download form. We prefer first North American print rights. Please use the Knitcircus Style Guide (pdf) for submissions.

  • Photos: We prefer to take our own photos of your knitted items. Please send samples to: Knitcircus Magazine, 5102 Shawano Ter., Madison, WI 53705 USA; we will return your samples as soon as possible. Photos submitted for publication must be of good print quality (300 dpi), and photostyling should reflect the season the magazine will be in print. Photos are good, the more the better! We may not be able to use all of your pics, but appreciate having a range to choose from!

  • Sewing patterns and fibercraft projects: if you are proficient in Illustrator, please send clear line drawings of any special steps or procedures. Photos or hand-drawn images will help us render drawings if you are not able to provide your own print-ready drawings. Please use the Knitcircus Tutorial Style Guide (pdf) for your submission.

  • Deadlines:
May 1 release, Summer Issue: Submissions due by March 1.
    Hot weather garments and accessories.

August 4 release, Fall Issue: Submissions due by June 1.

September 15 release, Holiday Gifts Issue: Submissions due July 1.

November 1 release, Winter Issue: Submissions due by September 1.
Snuggly winter garments and accessories. Men, women, and children.

February 1 release, Spring issue: Submissions due by December 1.
Transitional weather: cardigans, spring colors, brighten up your wardrobe for spring. Men, women, and children.

These deadlines are for completed items and patterns. If you would like to send us proposals, move all deadlines forward one quarter, to give yourself time to complete knitting and pattern writing. That is, a Summer issue proposal should get to us in early January, so we have the garment in hand for photography by April.

  • All submissions must be accompanied by the signed originality statement; ‘signed’ can mean signed, scanned and sent electronically, signed on paper and sent through the postal mail or ‘signed’ by typing your name and the date and returned electronically with your submission.

  • Compensation: Designers receive $25-50 USD, professional technical editing, complimentary issue featuring your pattern, a free ad spot for your blog/business/store, and 10 Pattern Collections to share with knitting friends. All rights revert to designers after next issue goes live.

  • Yarn support available from Berocco, Cascade, Spud and Chloë, Green Mountain Spinnery, Classic Elite, and independent dyers like Sun Valley Farms, Handwerks Textiles Stricken Smitten, Black Bunny Fibers, Posh Yarns, Lampyridae, Springtree Road and Sweet Georgia; send pattern proposal at least 4 weeks before official deadline to have yarn provided for you if accepted.

As we continue to grow, we will increase the monetary compensation to our designers.
